The Great Andean trail to Machu Picchu is a 7-day journey through ancient history, living culture and the magnificent landscape of Cusco and the Sacred Valley of the Incas. This once-in-a-lifetime exploration into the sacred havens of the Incas is equal parts physical, cultural and spiritual journey, a journey of knowledge and transformation gathered while trekking, sightseeing and enjoying the comfort of our camps over the mountains.
ITINERARY
CUSCO
On the first day if this 7 day cusco itinerary, Welcome to Cusco city. Meeting point at the Hotel at 3pm where our Local guide is going to meet you to brief about the Trip, please look for a note in the hotel lobby or ask the hotel reception where it will take place. After the briefing explore the ‘Walking city center’, the difference is that in this tour, you visit the places that are accessible by foot, so we will visit San Pedro market, the main square, the 12 Angled Stone, Regocijo Square.

- Important Information: Cusco is located at 3’350 masl (11’000 fts) you should be acclimatized at least 2 days. As this tour doesn’t involve much time in Cusco, this will also give you a chance to choose some of the optional places available. SACRED VALLEY
Day traveling beside to the magnificent Vilcanota River the most important known as Wilcamayo to the Incas, the sacred valley has been a source of livelihood to the locals for hundreds of years. We’ll stop in the famous lookout point of ‘’Taray’’ where you’ll see maize crops covering the terraced valley walls. Stop for lunch in a local community, where you’ll learn about their traditional lifestyle and maybe wrap your tongue around a few words of the Quechua, native language. After that, you’ll have time to browse the local handicrafts on offer, such as beads, ponchos and souvenirs. Lunch spot on the way to Ollantaytambo, where we check out the town’s archaeological site. INCA TRAIL: OLLANTAYTAMBO (2792MASL) – WAYLLABAMBA (3000MASL)
We will pick you up at 8:00 am from your hotel after breakfast. We will drive for about 45 minutes to the site called ‘’Kilometer 82’’ or Piscacucho where we will begin the inca trail hike. The altitude here is 2,673 meters (8,770 feet) and on this first day, we will hike about 11 km (7 miles). The first section of the inca trail to machu picchu is relatively flat, and we will trek for about 3 hours to our lunch spot, arriving in a green valley where we will visit our first archaeological site called Patallaqta, and here we will be able to look down and see more located in the valley. Then we will hike 20 minutes more until we arrive at our lunch site located at Tarayoc. After enjoying a big lunch, we will start the next stretch of the inca trail hike to our campsite, which will take 2 hours. This part of the inca trail machu picchu has small ascents and descents, and we will hike through a wooded valley until we reach our first campsite, Wayllabamba, which is at 3,000 meters, or 9,842 feet.

INCA TRAIL: WAYLLABAMBA (3000 MASL) – PACAYMAYO (3630MASL)
The second day of the inca trail is the most challenging since we will climb over 1,200 meters (3,940 feet) to reach the highest pass and will hike 12 km (7 miles) in total. After having breakfast, we will start our uphill hike, which will take about 5 hours to reach the pass. On the way up, we will pass through different climatic and ecological zones. We will start in green mossy forests and will end in the grassy highlands where there are no trees. Once we reach the highest point of the inca trail to machu picchu, known as Dead Woman’s Pass at 4,215 meters (13,828 feet), we will take a well-deserved break, take photos and will be able to enjoy the amazing view of both valleys below. After that, we will start our descent to the campsite, which will take about an hour and a half. We will climb down Inca stone steps heading down through the highlands until we reach our campsite called Pacaymayo, which is at 3,630 meters or 11,910 feet. Here we will have our lunch, then you will have well deserve time to rest and explore the area before having supper in the evening.

INCA TRAIL: PACAYMAYO (3630MASL) – WINAYWAYNA (2650MASL)
On the third day of the inca trail, we will hike the farthest distance (16 km or 10 miles) and will also explore the archaeological sites along the way. After having breakfast, we will hike up the opposite side of the valley to reach the second pass, which will take about 2 hours. About halfway up we will see a small, round, roofless stone building, known as Runkuracay. After our history explanation here, we will continue to the second pass, Runkuracay, at 3,941 meters, or 12,800 feet. Then we will descend for about 2 hours to our lunch site, on the way down we will have an optional Inca site to explore called Sayaqmarka. Then we will arrive to our lunch site and once we are full will continue hiking 4 more hours to our last campsite. The first part of the trail will involve little ascents and descents until we reach the next archaeological center called Phuyupatamarka. This location is also a second option for the last campsite. After our tour, we will hike downhill and will visit the farming terraces at Intipata. From there we will continue to our campsite called Wiñaywayna, and is located at 2,650 meters, or 8,694 feet. This is our last night camping in the inca trail hike, and in the evening after supper, we will get to thank our amazing team for their hard work.
MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO: WINAYWAYNA (2650MASL) – MACHU PICCHU (2400MASL)
On the last day we will wake up very early (at about 3:00 am) and after having small breakfast will wait in line until the checkpoint opens at 5:30 am. Once we pass the checkpoint, we will start hiking to Machu Picchu, which will take 1:30 hours, and we will hike for 6 km (4 miles) following the inca trail which is relatively flat until we reach Intipunku or the famous Sun Gate. Here, we will have our first view of Machu Picchu below us and depending on the season, we may get to see the sunrise. From there, we will descend 30 minutes to Machu Picchu which sits at 2,400 meters or 7,874 feet, and we will first check any large backpacks at the entrance. We will then have our 2-hour tour where you will see and learn about the most important sites including the Temple of the Sun, the main plaza, Intihuatana and the Machu Picchu history. After your tour, you will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, and in the afternoon the train back to Ollantaytambo where we will pick you up from the train station and drop you off at your hotel in Cusco.

PHENOMENAL JUNGLE



INTRODUCTION

A four-day exploration of the Tambopata National Reserve, offering a unique opportunity to experience both a mammal clay lick and macaw clay lick.
ITINERARY
Flight to Puerto Maldonado and journey to the amazon ecolodge. (Flight arrangements must be before 13:20 hours)
Once you arrive at the Puerto Maldonado airport, your naturalist guide will meet you. After a brief stop in town to store large luggage, drive to the pier and travel by covered motorized boat to the amazon ecolodge. En route, spot bird species typical of the local river and forest edge. The Tambopata Rainforest area holds the world record for the most bird sightings in one area.
Enjoy a welcome drink and orientation. Before dinner, head out for a night walk around the lodge grounds. Get the lowdown on local flora and fauna, and grab a flashlight to discover what’s living around lodge grounds. Receive help from the talented, expert naturalist guide to locate heaps of hidden creatures, about 50% of the animals are nocturnal in our Tambopata ecotours.
Bird and mammal clay licks
After an early breakfast, you will board our launch for the 9-kilometer ride upriver to the trailhead. You will spend an hour walking this trail, with plenty of time to observe Amazon flora and fauna along the way. At the clay lick, with your guide you will await the arrival of the white-lipped peccaries that often gather here to feed on mineral deposits. Moving on through the forest, you will continue to the macaw lick, where in the early morning groups of scarlet and red-and-green macaws often gather to feed on clay deposits. After plenty of time to observe birds, you will return to the river via another forest trail, and take the launch back to the amazon ecolodge in time for lunch. On the trails it is possible to see howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys and squirrel monkeys. After lunch, guests can choose from a number of options, including:
- Exploring the trails around the Amazon Ecolodge.
- Visiting a nearby forest farm.
- Swimming in a stream that flows close to the lodge.
- Relaxing and enjoying the facilities of the amazon ecolodge.
In the evening, you will return to the river in search of nocturnal fauna, including caiman, after meeting in the bar for a brief talk given by our guides about this fascinating nocturnal creature. You will search for caiman using flashlights to pick out their “eye shine” as they hunt along the riverbanks.
Take a boat excursion to a spectacular hidden lake. There’s a chance to spot the elusive black caiman and giant otters. Return for lunch and another free afternoon for relaxing.
Enjoy visits to oxbow lakes to learn about the jungle and its inhabitants. Be introduced to the area’s rich flora and fauna by expert naturalist guides, who can teach extensive uses for medicinal and other forest plant resources through traditional techniques. We will get on time to have a delicious lunch at the heart of the lake. The afternoon is free for relaxation and bathing.
After breakfast, return by canoe to Puerto Maldonado and transfer to the airport for departure.
Time to return to the city of Puerto Maldonado is scheduled according to flight time of the group. In the mornings you can see the wildlife that is particularly active at this time, are frequently heard howler monkeys or stop. Your guide will give support to his arrival in Puerto Maldonado and will relocate to the airport and assist you on your flight.

INCA TRAIL: CUSCO (3’350 MASL) – KM104 (2’170MASL)
We will pick you up from your hotel in the early morning and take you to the train station. Your fully-guided hike will begin at Km 104 of the Cusco-Machu Picchu railroad.
During this beautiful short trek, you will experience spectacular high forest scenery dominated by snow-capped peaks, and there will be plenty of time to visit the picturesque Wiñay Wayna archaeological site. You will have your first glimpse of Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate, or Intipunku, high above the Inca city.
Forty minutes later, we will arrive at Machu Picchu, from where we will continue the descent to the small town of Aguas Calientes.

MACHU PICCHU (2’400 MASL) – CUSCO (3’350 MASL)
Today will be devoted to your guided tour of Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas rediscovered in 1911. Our experienced and knowledgeable guide will escort you as you visit the site’s temples and palaces and explore its residential and agricultural areas.
Other options on this second day of short inca trail include scaling the mountain known as Huayna Picchu or visiting Machu Picchu Mountain, before the return trip to Cusco by train.

DAY 4: RAINBOW MOUNTAIN TOUR
We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and set off in our private vehicle, heading southeast in the direction of Puno. After a journey of around 3 hours and thirty minutes, taking us through the typical high Andes scenery of the Cusco region, we will arrive at our first viewing point, with its fine vista of the rainbow-colored mountain peak.
From here, the brief ascent on foot to view the rainbow mountain more closely is not a difficult walk. The ascent is gradual, along a good trail through pastureland, with spectacular views of Mount Ausangate and other mountains of the Andes.
However, the altitude may affect some walkers, during the gradual climb from 4787 m / 15,705 feet to 4891 m / 16,046 feet.
